Rust is the hidden killer of Honda S2000s, particularly those from northern markets. At 15–25 years old, rust inspection is a non-negotiable part of any pre-purchase inspection.
The S2000's body structure uses high-strength steel stampings with good factory corrosion protection. However, the design has several water traps — areas where road salt and water pool and cannot drain. Honda improved coatings over the model years, but no S2000 is immune to rust in a salt-belt environment.
The battery sits under the hood on the passenger side. Battery acid fumes corrode the surrounding metal. Combined with poor drainage, this area is almost universally rusted on northeast-market cars.
How to check: Look at the tray with a flashlight. Light surface rust is cosmetic; a tray rusted through means water has been trapped there for years.
Repair cost: A rusted battery tray can be cut out and replaced or patched — typically $300–700 at a body shop.
The S2000 sits low, and the floor pans can trap water under the carpet. Remove the carpet (dealer or seller should allow this on a PPI) and inspect the sheet metal with a flashlight.
Early warning: Damp carpet or a musty smell means water is getting in.
Serious rust: Metal that compresses under light pressure, holes, or rust perforation.
Get under the car and inspect the frame rails from the front crossmember to the rear of the car. Use a flashlight and screwdriver — poke any rusty areas gently to test for depth.
Surface rust (reddish-brown coating that doesn't penetrate) can be treated. Structural rust that compromises the metal's integrity is a serious safety issue.
Water and debris collect under the door seals and in the sill areas. Check by removing the rubber door seals — you may find significant rust hiding underneath.
The inner wheel wells are sprayed with undercoating from the factory but deteriorate over time. Look for rust perforating through, especially at the seams.
The rear subframe bolts to the unibody at four points. These attachment areas should be solid steel. Rust here is a structural concern that may require professional repair.
These conditions should end a negotiation or dramatically reduce an offer:

A trusted body shop can put the car on a lift and tell you exactly what you're dealing with. This is worth $100–150 for any S2000 being considered in a rust-prone market.
