Oil selection matters more on the S2000 than on most cars. The F20C/F22C's tight tolerances, high-revving nature, and VTEC oil-pressure dependence make oil quality and viscosity critically important.
Honda specifies 5W-30 or 10W-30 API SJ or later (SN is the current standard). Full synthetic is strongly recommended by the S2000 community.
For daily driving:
The modern trend toward ultra-low viscosity oils for fuel economy does not apply to the S2000. The F20C/F22C has oil clearances designed for 5W-30/10W-30. Running 0W-20:
Do not use 0W-20 in an S2000.
Heavier oils flow more slowly on cold start, increasing wear during the critical first seconds of operation. Also reduces oil pressure response to the VTEC solenoid.
Avoid 20W-50 for street use.
The S2000 community has accumulated extensive experience with specific oils. Consistently well-regarded options:
Full Synthetic:
For track use:
Honda's factory recommendation is relatively long. The S2000 community consensus is more conservative:
After track days, change oil even if the mileage is low. Track driving thermally degrades oil far faster than street driving.
VTEC on the S2000 is entirely oil-pressure operated. The VTEC solenoid opens, and oil pressure pushes pins to lock the high-lift cam lobes into position. This means:
If you see a P1259 code (VTEC system malfunction), check oil level and pressure before assuming a solenoid failure.
It's normal for the F20C/F22C to consume some oil, especially:
Check the oil level every 1,000–2,000 miles. Carry an extra quart. If consumption exceeds 1 quart per 3,000 miles, investigate:
