The S2000's electrical system is generally reliable, but age brings predictable issues. Most are straightforward to diagnose and repair.
All US-market S2000s are OBD-II compliant. A basic OBD-II scanner (under $30 at any auto parts store) can read and clear codes.

The most common S2000 electrical/engine code. Almost always one of these three causes:
The solenoid body has an O-ring seal that degrades with age and heat cycles. When it fails, oil bleeds past and oil pressure to the VTEC system drops.
Repair: Replace the O-ring kit (~$8–15 from Honda). Access the solenoid on the side of the engine — remove 2 bolts, pull out solenoid, replace O-ring.
The oil pressure switch monitors VTEC circuit pressure. A faulty switch triggers the code even if the solenoid works perfectly.
Repair: Replace the switch (~$30–40 part). Located near the solenoid.
If oil is low or pressure is insufficient, VTEC won't engage and will trigger this code.
Check: Oil level first (dipstick). If level is fine, test oil pressure with a gauge.
S2000s can develop battery drain issues from:
Diagnosis: Use a multimeter in current mode (amperes) between the negative battery terminal and negative cable. With everything off, draw should be under 50mA. More indicates a parasitic drain.
Signs of alternator failure:
Test alternator output: With engine running, battery should read 13.8–14.8V. Below 13.5V suggests charging system issue.
The battery tray on many S2000s has corroded from acid fumes. This can:
Clean corroded battery terminals with baking soda and water. Replace corroded tray hardware.
The S2000's soft top has a power-assist mechanism with limit switches. Common issues:
The S2000's electric cooling fan can fail:
Check the fuse first (under-hood fuse box, 30A fan fuse). Then test the fan motor directly with 12V to confirm it spins.
If fitting headers or eliminating the catalytic converter, you'll likely get a P0420 (catalyst efficiency) code. Solutions:
